16-February-2009 - Hotel Utah Open Mic, San Francisco, California

Hailing from the Wisconsin Northwoods, JJ Schultz captures the lonesome middle-America landscape with the wry clarity of Nebraska era Springsteen. Schultz’s wavering vibrato captures the snap shots of everyday people surviving the life of rural America. The dusty barrooms, the front porch steps and farmer's fields are images delivered with a subtle passion that's balanced between sparse guitar picking and a poignant vocal delivery that is as distinctive as Jay Farrar and Townes Van Zandt.

Carolina

JJ Schultz is a Wisconsin born artist, but he has been working in San Francisco for many years now. He discographically debuted with " Bustin' Outa Town" in 2004, followed by " Something To Me " ( 2005 ) and " Travelling Sons " ( 2007 ). His actuelle offering is " Carolina", a full-length with 8 tracks in. With minnimal following back-up instrumentations, Mr. Schultz deliver a portion of americana/roots variants, with strong songwritings, added with emotionally driven lyrical pastiche. He write about love, sadness and passion, creating a emotional atmosphere, and specific mood. Some reviewers used to compare a mentioned specific atmosphere with Springsteen's " Nebraska" , and to be honest some similiarities are present, but more in also mentioned ambiental/atmospheric methods of exposure, than in author's views. JJ Schultz is a serious author, and " Carolina" as a album offer enough pleasent moments... Rating : 8 / 10
JJ Schultz fourth album took three years to write and two years to record. Either he's slow and he is thoughtful and thorough. I would guess the latter. Yet it is not exceptionally unique, he comes with, but interesting folk rock with a personal budget. He has been likened to a cross between Bruce Spingsteen at the time of "Nebraska" and Townes Van Zandt. Or perhaps better, a merging of the two. Though I would say that there is something more. An understated melancholy appropriations where the little thin and high singing voice can be heard with an easy anxiously trembling. But it is the music building, leaving a strange feeling. It is an insidious Hammond organ that carries the songs along with Schultz, guitar and vocals. The effect is at times dumb. It is hovering, anxious fateful. Like life in the Midwest, where JJ Schultz will. Wisconsin lowland. Longing and sweeping winds over a slow landscape with its dusty bars, secluded verandas and endless arable land. All delivered with a sparse guitar playing, emotional vocals and Hammond organ as companions. It is far from religious but there is a sense of ecclesial spirituality, thoughtfulness and intimacy. Now everything is not cast in the same mold after all. The initial "Cleveland" will also have a slide guitar and an electric guitar solo make clear markings. The title song "Carolina" will be an additional instrument and a slight speed increase, to live out fully in the rock "Karma Come Early" and then return to their origin and end with a wonderfully soaring guitar in "Across The Bay". Carolina is a bit shorter collection of tracks. Eight of just over half an hour. But half an hour which is not any other corpse. JJ Schultz is a new experience for me. "Carolina" is a girl worth looking for.
Originally from Northern Wisconsin draws singer-songwriter JJ Schultz in late nineties in San Francisco. He is a regular player of the club scene in those parts. Three albums of his hand, saw the light: Bustin 'Outa Town, Something To Me and Traveling Songs. On Saturday, August 11th this year saw his latest album, Carolina was born. It is a half hour long album on which he presents his version of western roots. The songs on this album are short stories which Schultz artfully his own life experiences has processed. The themes are universal and demonstrate a strong commitment of Schultz and his fellow men. In implementing the album falls into two parts. A part is Schultz 'song and solo fingerpicking guitar complemented with separate hammond sound of keyboardist Danny Eisenberg (known from Tift Merritt, Ryan Adams). At other times he will be accompanied by his regular group with a leading role for the guitarists Scott Robertson and Jeff Cotton plus the solid rhythm section consisting of bassist Craig Koozer and drummer Manny Bernal. The band plays from 2002 in this composition which can be heard in the balanced sound in all the songs can be heard. Schultz wrote the songs in the period 2007-2010 to them in the next two years to record. Schultz produced the album themselves assisted by Roger Rocha (Non-Blondes, The Golden Hearts) that the admissions accounted for and also gave the studio.
Savings ... At first sight it because "Carolina" - JJ Schultz's fourth album - in contrast to "Bustin 'Outa Town" ('04) "Something to Me" (The JJ Schultz Band '05) and "Traveling Songs" (' 07) provided in a thin envelope, also on the number of songs / timing (eight, 30.28) was significantly pruned. Fortunately prevails in the singer - songwriter from San Francisco still quality over quantity and the expiration date of the eight songs - written in the period '07 - '10 - perhaps much longer than surprising, but deserved high ranking in the current Euro Americana Chart. Once again it seems that the former hobo from Wisconsin Springsteen's "Nebraska" still as a reference point for his songs to wear and also the "Alchemy" by Townes Van Zandt, Woodie Guthrie, Neil Young and Steve Earle's him (fortunately) not strange. The ideal breeding ground for home-grown plants as "Cleveland" and "My Lady Jane," pearls "Carolina", "Across the Bay" and the gently rocking "Karma Come Early" which co - gardeners Jeff Cotton / Telecaster, Scott Robertson / Stratocaster , slide backup vocals but Danny Eisenberg / Hammond clearly showcase their skills. Carolina is an album that was neatly divided, both Schultz and the other band members are sublime use of their limited time to shine .... short but sweet! (SWA)
Like many singer-songwriter JJ relocated to sunny San Francisco, in this case from rural Wisconsin. From his new home he brought since the 2004 debut "Bustin 'Outa Town' two successors. The fourth piece 'Carolina' is built with eight songs that originated in the period 2007-2010 were At first, no earth-shattering things happen here on this disc that takes half an hour and hardly can be considered as a feature film. Your precious time is spent. In a simple country folk idiom Shultz sings the fate of his former countrymen from the midwest. Usually only his acoustic guitar as accompaniment in the background the ubiquitous Hammond Danny Eisenberg those subtle accents in songs like 'Whiskey Bottle', 'Alchemy' and 'Houston' changes. The almost inaudible whistle ran background vocals by Dawn Oberg occasionally makes for a somewhat mysterious atmosphere. In 'Cleveland' is there a full band and beautiful slide work of Scott Robertson at. In the title song 'Carolina', not about the same state but a vanished friend who also 'Houston' have featured knows Shultz the desolate atmosphere of his native region to grasp, somewhat similar to what Springsteen "Nebraska" put down. While sober approach to Townes Van Zandt recalls. The gripping epic contrasts sharply with the rugged country of the outsider from the rocking 'Kama Come Early'. Even in the sunny bay area Shultz is consumed by melancholy and memories of better times. Happier you will not immediately the painful personal confessions of JJ Shultz but catchy beautiful piece of this noble stranger certainly deserves more attention. JJ Shultz lives now in San Francisco, but the intimistic, personal stories on his fourth album 'Carolina' go back to the time in Wisconsin. Sparse, but impressing, instrumentation creates the desolate atmosphere of the life in Midwest. 'Carolina' is filled with beautiful song work that deserves your full attention.
The most traditional American music genres are folk and country. Let that be the two key elements in the music that started in 2002 as a solo artist singer-songwriter JJ Schultz since then a number of plates together. His debut album "Bustin 'Outa Town" from 2004 was immediately a great success of music-loving America count. Also successor "Something To Me" in 2005 appeared as a plate of "The JJ Schultz Band" and in 2007 released "Traveling Songs" were two beautiful albums of this artist residing in San Francisco. On his most recent, fourth album "Carolina" chose JJ Schultz there to sober and intimate to keep the eight self-composed songs on this album mainly acoustic to frame with only his acoustic guitar and here and there some Hammond organ, played by Danny Eisenberg from San Francisco, a keyboard virtuoso who previously earned his spurs at ao Jonathan Richman, Shelby Lynne, Ryan Adams and Tift Merritt. The barely identifiable, but just so lovely backing vocals of Dawn Oberg deserve a special mention in this review. The title track of the album "Carolina" (see video) is a literary epic of six and a half minutes in which he emotions of love, grief and passion together let melt into a beautiful, understated but very poignant ballad. So we get our favorite music love offered. The more swinging rock sound has no secrets for this musician, so at least it appears from the song "Karma Come Early" which he wise except a full backing band has drummed up. The Hammond Organ of Danny Eisenberg and intimate vocals of JJ Schultz in the songs "My Lady Lane" and the slide guitar work of Scott Robertson in opener "Cleveland" and the final song "Across The Bay" provide huge memorable moments during the listening of this its only 30 minutes far too short album. Ask me not the why, but the first thing I did when the last note of this CD resounded had was quickly pushing the start button on the CD player to all this beautiful work again advance to relive. San Francisco's resident JJ Schultz admires folk and country music and has been writing songs in both styles that now appear on his fourth album Carolina. Surrounded with only music from his acoustic guitar and some Hammond organ played by Danny Eisenberg, several highly emotional tracks about love, sadness and passion are creating a very touching atmosphere while listening to this splendid record. That's the way I like it!
From the U.S. state of Wyoming comes the singer / songwriter JJ Schultz , who has since moved to San Francisco in (mostly) sunny California. And if I have the right elicited, it is after three albums at the fourth plant of the American. With a running time of only half an hour I am doing myself a hard time, "Carolina" to see as a full length album, but only at the margins. Oops, there are the good is JJ announced yet so smooth, his voice was as concise as those of people such as Townes Van Zandt and Jay Farrar ! I would go so far, however, the best will not, even if the song the protagonist pours very intimate and atmospheric in the listener's ears. Because these two musicians ( Van Zandt is unfortunately already deceased on 01.01.1997) play (ed) and sing and sang then still in a different league. This is the power of Schultz but not dull, because that is all honor. Often orchestrated sparingly so the songs come when the acoustic guitar is supported by a bass, an electric times, the drums or a soothing warm Hammond sound. But that fact also provided with the haunting and intense vocals Schultz 'the tension and atmosphere of the eight tracks is established. This is not only clever made, but on top of that very effective. Started "Carolina" is, however, very peppy with the song "Cleveland" which is the fact that you have to be lucky so many times in the wide world looks, though in many cases it is so close to your own home. And while it also plays along a good bit homesick, it goes with "Whiskey Bottle" so that the protagonist - is still on the way - in the process is to recognize who or what is really his own worst enemy. A good bit quieter than the opener but also wins this number by fine songwriting and very much feel. But the Wahlkalifornier can actually rock and what he does here with "Karma Come Early" to the test. To the driving rhythm and Schultz hammered singing is joined by the fine slide work of Scott Robertson and quiet of this nature would have one or two more titles may be there. Because with the (admittedly beautiful) "My Lady Lane", "Houston" and "Across The Bay" the disc will sound again much more contemplative. "Carolina" is the overall balance is rather quiet, but scores very heavily by its dense atmosphere and the vocal presentation by JJ Schultz . And when even the Hammond already mentioned in the background pulling her melancholy honeycomb, you can really immerse yourself in the world of the protagonist. Pity that this disc has failed so soon, because apart from that we are dealing here with a very fine piece.
JJ Schultz Carolina - The German-sounding name, despite American musician, JJ Schultz, America's number one for a long time guitarist Bruce Springsteen is following in the footsteps of your act. Carolina is already the fourth alum of JJ Schultz who builds his sound as singer songwriter on a mixture of Folk and country. For eight tunes long Schultz shows us again his capabilities as singer songwriter. Done on a very personal way, often only accompanied by his guitar the man creates an atmosphere that is quite common, yet unique in its own way. Leading track 'Cleveland' is certainly one of those tunes to remember. Another one that is most impressing is the title track of the album. 'Carolina' is over six minutes long and comes with a haunting atmosphere that makes you silent from the very first note of this track. In the background you'll hear the Hammond organ of Danny Eisenberg, best known for his work with Jonathan Richman and Ryan Adams. 'On Karma come Early' Schultz throws in a more modern sound while on 'Houston' he is a true troubadour. (3 out of 5 stars)
This singer-songwriter JJ Schultz is not happy we were able to learn French in 2004, when his first album Bustin 'Outa Town released. Some CDs further and eight years later, we hear at Carolina still bleak and penetrating atmosphere of vast, empty landscapes. A metaphor excellent gloomy mood reflected in the eight songs, which in just over half an hour pass. So fascinating, honest and concise pour your heart on topics such as lost loves, alcohol abuse, hope and longing for warmth and romance, you do not hear so often. His lightly skipping tenor, the smooth, heartfelt melodies and instrumental interpretation ragged deliver great songs. Alternately in a soft and bare sounding acoustic, electric or solid abrasive setting is especially the sublime 'sneak creep by' Hammond organ sound that consistently impress. The songs are magnificent in their simplicity, passionate and personal in nature and musically simple and powerful designed by Schultz and his band. It demands besides Hammond organist Danny Eisenberg, also (slide) guitarist Jeff Cotton a leading role for himself. At Carolina JJ Schultz distinguishes itself from colleagues by a beautiful private sound. That is within the limited musical singer-songwriter under all a really nice artistic achievement, which hopefully but probably by many enthusiasts will be appreciated.

JJ Schultz | Mr. Andrew - LIVE IN CONCERT

What more can one say? Some may describe this show as the CONCERT EVENT OF THE CENTURY, and I would not argue with that sentiment, especially considering they could well be describing the century that starts at 8pm, Thursday Dec 5th, 2013. It's also possible they could be describing the century that begins the day prior. I advise not risking it and coming to the show.

In addition to being the CONCERT EVENT OF THE CENTURY, This show is also a release concert for Mr. Andrew's latest EP.

Staffan Solding on Carolina

Branimir Lokner on Carolina

JJ Schultz - Carolina - Album release party

my brand new album, Carolina, is finally here! and I would like to formally and cordially invite you to my album release party & concert coming up on Saturday August 11th.

I started writing for this album over 5 years ago and I'm really excited to have the final product in my hand. I'd like to get it into your hands in style, and so on Saturday August 11th, I'm throwing a concert/party at the BAMM.tv stage. Here's a map: http://goo.gl/maps/ULsA. Spoiler alert - it's at 43 Norfolk St. in San Francisco.

The release concert includes performances by some of my favorite local artists as well as complimentary beer and BBQ (!!). Joining me on the bill is Terese Taylor, Nomi, Death to the West, and a DJ set by Klaus Fluoride . It's an early show - I'm going to fire up the grill and tap the beer at 5:30pm. The music will start at 6pm and go till about 11pm. I play two sets - a solo set at 7pm and a band set at 9:30pm. There's no cover and the show is all ages (but the free beer, of course, is 21+).

I'm also going be doing a showing/sale of my poster archive that evening. The fella who designs all of my album covers, Mark Tolsted, has also done a lot of really sweet screen printed posters for me and my different concert series over the years, and I'll have a bunch of these posters for sale as well.

Anyways, hope you can make it. It's gonna be good times for sure, and it'd be really great to toast my new album with you.

Blind Willies + Avi Vinocur + JJ Schultz @ Disco Volante

I'm playing a cool show tonight in Oakland. Disco Volante! no idea what Volante means, but I do understand Disco, and tonight I will redefine Disco such that from here forward, it will mean 'country dirges plucked in 3/4'. A historical night to say the least - come on out so you can tell your grandchildren you were there.

This will be the second to last BW full band show until August. We're playing two sets to compensate.

JJ and Avi will sensitively destroy you with solo acoustic sets as well.
